Lassen Volcanic National Park: Campground Fuels Reduction

May contain: person, human, tree, plant, and wood

Drought has contributed to significant tree mortality in California forests. At Lassen Volcanic National Park, drought and an increase in pathogens have resulted in significant tree mortality in developed areas of the park, such as campgrounds. These hazard trees pose a risk to visitor safety and accessibility. RCDTC in collaboration with the National Parks Service assisted with the removal of dead and downed forest material in the park resulting from increased tree mortality. This tree removal project helped inform the National Parks Service of different tree removal methods and their cost comparisons to help future fuels reduction efforts be more efficient, low-impact, and cost-effective.
